Four Marks
Four Marks
Since Mark Bloomfield has recently joined our group (welcome,
Mark Bloomfield!), we now have a total of four Marks who
frequent Penultimates: Mark Leonard, Mark Worley, Mark
Bloomfield, and myself, Mark Weber. We have a Mark for:
- each fundamental element,
- each season,
- each direction, or
- each letter of a four letter word.
Definitions
"Mark" is one of those words with hundreds of definitions;
here are a few of the more interesting ones ...
- something that one wishes to achieve; a goal
- an object or a point that serves as a guide
- an impression (as a scratch, scar, or stain) made on something
- a person who is the intended victim of a swindler; a dupe
Simplified Naming System, SNS
Because our plethora of Marks may be confusing to some, I have,
through much hard work and many sleepless nights, not to mention
a few too many drunken stupors, come up with the following
Simplified Naming System:
- Mark Weber: Mark #1
- Mark Leonard: Mark A
- Mark Worley: Mark I
- Mark Bloomfield: Mark Alpha
Henceforth, please refer to each of us using our nom de ultimate.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Excerpt from J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Marks"
Four for the Dark Lord, on his dark throne,
In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie;
    One Mark to find them all,
    One Mark to bind them,
    One Mark to crush them all,
    And one Mark to grind them,
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie...
